Many people who live in small home units and modest apartments find it difficult deciding how they can dress their small kitchen window so that it looks stylish and warm without blocking out the natural light. Fitting conventional gingham curtains or even pull down blinds are an option because they look the part and provide the required privacy. Because a room has a small window it is important to allow as much light into the room as possible.

These day’s homeowners have found that fitting a classy stylish kitchen valance to the top of small kitchen windows is another option that can be followed without the need to reduce outside natural light from entering. A trendy colorful kitchen valance is also ideal for covering up badly fitted window frames and can make a dull looking kitchen fresh and inviting.

There are various ways and means small windows can be fitted with a kitchen valance. One novel method is to fit a wooden frame valance across the top of the kitchen window. If you have basic handyman skills and a sharp saw, hammer, screws and a long ruler or measuring tape you may be able to construct your own wooden frame from a sheet of custom wood supplied by most large hardware stores.

The object is to build a box type frame valance that is designed to fit along the top of the window frame so it gives the illusion of making a small window look bigger. When the frame is painted the same color as the kitchen walls it will also blend in nicely with the existing color scheme. By making and fitting the completed box frame securely to the top of the window you can then screw curtain tracks to the inside of the frame. Although kitchen valances would not be suitable, hanging drapes or curtains would be ideal as they will hang down the sides of the frame and away from the window. Alternatively, a curtain rod can be fitted closer to the glass if the room is too small. Having a wooden valance can also add a sense of style to small bland windows.
